Why my shears won't cut gr?

At first I thought they were blunt but I have sharpened them to razor sharp but they still just bent the gr between the blades. Can anyone tell me the mechanics or logic of how shears work? They cut paper effortlessly though. It's one of those two handed shears sold by Homebase.
