Help ! ..My "pointer" is going wild ! ....?

Sometimes my arrow pointer is so sensitive it bounces all over the screen, the screen flashes and lots of different Windows boxes pop up...My mouse is a wired one...Any help on correcting this would be really appreciated ...PS...I am not very computer literate ....Many thanks !!
